How to establish and sustain organizational health

The ability to deliver superior financial and operating performance over the long term by aligning around a clear vision, strategy, and culture; to execute with excellence, and to renew the organizations focus overtime by responding to market trends – aka resilience. McKinsey Consulting (paraphrased)

Vision drives strategy by showing the entire team what success looks like in vivid detail.  This “manifesto” describes the ideal future state of the key areas of the organization as if it has already happened. This vital document explains to the team where the company is going – what all followers crave from their leaders.

Strategy is a unique market position incorporating a differentiating set of interdependent activities producing solutions our core customers want and value. It is how we define success.

Tactics are the short and longer term actions taken to make the strategic thinking operational.  Three year, one year, quarterly and other planning timeframes are made up primarily of doing the right things, the right way, on time and within budget.

Combining this performance-based methodology with a healthy Identity is how top organizations thrive and endure.  A healthy identity is often made up of core components. They are:

  1. Purpose – why did we start this company? What difference were we looking to make in the world?
  2. Values – who are we?  How do we behave in any circumstance?
  3. Objectives – what are the key operating principles that guide our decisions and actions?
  4. Cause – what are we looking to achieve over time?

Example – The founding of the United States of America

  • Purpose – defined primarily by the Declaration of Independence
  • Values – Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…
  • Objectives – a government of the people, by the people, for the people
  • Cause – to form a more perfect Union.

Combining a healthy organization that executes with excellence is a tremendous strategic advantage.  This combination also generates resilience, productivity and engagement across all facets of the business.
