I spent a weekend in Nashville recently spending time with some of the most impressive, committed, and generous people I have ever met. One of whom was Alan Mulally, the reason I am fortunate to be connected to 100COACHES.
Here are a few of the things I learned during the weekend and from Alan over the past few years.
We don’t see values and beliefs. They are expressed by our behaviors.
In order to reinforce positive and progressive behaviors, it is important to have guiding principles to live and work by. Here are Alan’s:
- People first …love ‘em up
- Everyone is included
- Compelling vision, comprehensive strategy, and relentless implementation
- Clear performance goals
- One plan
- Facts and data
- Expect the unexpected and expect to deal with it
- Everyone knows the plan, the status, and areas that need special attention
- Propose a plan, positive, find a way attitude
- Respect, listen, help, and appreciate each other
- Emotional resilience – trust the process
- Have fun – enjoy the journey and each other
What are yours?
Lastly, include ALL the stakeholders (team, customers, partners, suppliers, the environment, etc.) especially when things are tough – love ‘em up!!
Is this true for you?
The main thing I took away from the weekend was that a system like Working Together is important but what is vital is the leader’s commitment to it.
I have uncovered dozens of business operating systems over the years from ScalingUp to EOS to Working Together. None of them fully works without the commitment of the leader to its fullest implementation and expression. That combined with a compelling vision and courage are the best ingredients to “take the guesswork out of growth” of the team and the business.
Are you ready to commit?
If not, you and/or members of your team are likely managing a secret that is preventing the growth of your business.
